What network marketing really is (and what it isn't)
By Justine & Phil · 16 July 2026 · 5 min read
If you've ever heard the words 'network marketing' and felt your shoulders tense, you're not alone. It's an industry with a mixed reputation — some of it deserved, most of it based on how a small number of people have done it badly. After more than two decades in this profession, we want to give you the honest, unhyped version.
What it actually is
Network marketing is a distribution model. Instead of a company spending millions on TV ads and shop-front rent, they pay ordinary people to recommend products they genuinely use. That's it. No warehouse. No cold-calling strangers on the street. Just word-of-mouth, rewarded fairly.
The best companies in the space make products people would buy anyway, and pay a percentage of the sales back to the people doing the recommending. When it's done well, it's one of the most accessible ways to build an additional income around a full-time job or family.
The myths we hear most
- "It's a pyramid scheme." Pyramid schemes are illegal and pay purely for recruitment. Legitimate network marketing pays on product sales — no product, no pay.
- "Only the people at the top make money." In any profession — including employment — experience and effort tend to earn more. What matters is whether new people can genuinely progress. In a good company, they can.
- "You have to be pushy." The opposite is true. The people who succeed long-term are the ones who share honestly, help others, and never chase.
- "You need a huge audience." You don't. You need a small number of the right conversations, done consistently.
Who it's genuinely a fit for
Network marketing suits people who want to build something of their own but don't want the risk of a traditional business. You keep your job. You start small. You learn as you go, with mentors who've done it before.
It's not a fit for everyone — and that's fine. If you want a quick payday, this isn't it. If you want to build something meaningful over one to three years, with real coaching and a community around you, it can genuinely change your life.
The bit no one tells you
The biggest thing network marketing has given us isn't the income (though we're grateful for it). It's the personal growth. You become a better communicator, a better listener, and a more confident version of yourself. Those skills stay with you for life — whatever you go on to do.
The people who win in this profession aren't the loudest. They're the ones who show up consistently, care about others genuinely, and keep learning.
